MAREP stands for MArine
REPort. A MAREP is a radio message
of weather and sea conditions observed by YOU.
Why send MAREPs? Radar, satellites and computers are great tools to NWS forecasters,
but noting beats a pair of eyes.
Your report at sea will:
- help to improve the accuracy and timeliness of marine forecasts and warnings.
- Fill in the gaps between weather buoys.
- Save the lives of fellow mariners.
When you hear the NWS hail for MAREPS on VHF radio, please give as much of
the following as possible:
- Call sign or vessel name.
- Approximate location.
- Wind direction and speed.
- Sea State.
- Visibility.
- Present Weather.
You can call the NWS whenever you encounter extreame or unforecasted weather.
The NWS monitors VHF Channel 16 24 hours a day. Or you can call free of charge
