Important Information about RAWS Observations
On June 15, 2005, web pages on the NOAA/NWS server (raws.boi.noaa.gov) in Boise, Idaho
that provide RAWS information for a variety of applications will be redirected to a new
source of RAWS information. The core functions of the server will move to hardware provided
by the BLM and housed at NWS Western Region Headquarters in Salt Lake City. The software
required to access the RAWS data will be maintained by the University of Utah. Benefits
resulting from this switch include: improved access to RAWS data as a result of redundant
hardware; improved timeliness of the RAWS data (average latencies have been reduced from
20 minutes to 10 minutes); and integration of the RAWS data with data from over 60 other
sources that are provided by MesoWest.
After June 15, 2005, the primary means to access provisional RAWS data in real time will be the
ROMAN web interface:
http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/roman
This interface is currently located at http://www.met.utah.edu/roman
The official archival source for RAWS data will remain the Western Regional Climate Center at
http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/wraws/
The University of Utah will maintain a backup ROMAN web server that will also serve as a means
to continue testing and development of the ROMAN software at:
http://www.met.utah.edu/droman
As a result of the improved timeliness and ease of access to the RAWS data through ROMAN, some of
the existing text files presently available at http://raws.boi.noaa.gov will be discontinued on
June 1, 2005. Other files will remain available during the 2005 fire season but may be discontinued
after the season ends.
Files that will continue to be generated for the 2005 fire season:
Individual files for each RAWS station currently located in the directory:
http://raws.boi.noaa.gov/obs/
These files will be located after June 1, 2005 in
http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/obs/
The files will be updated every 30 minutes. More timely access will be available through ROMAN.
The summary web page, http://raws.boi.noaa.gov/rawsobs.html, that presently provides one means of
access to all of those files will no longer be maintained.
Summary of RAWS station metadata located in the file http://raws.boi.noaa.gov/idx/raws_idx.txt
will be located after June 15, 2005 in
http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/idx/raws_idx.txt
Two files presently available via ftp from Boise will continue to be available for http protocol
download. These files are:
raws.all A file containing all RAWS observations since the previous file generation (30 minute update cycle)
raws.idx A file containing current metadata for all stations and updated every 30 minutes
Please contact the MesoWest team (mesowest@met.utah.edu) for information on how to continue to obtain these files.
An alternative to the raws.all/raws.idx files (with reduced latencies and more complete data in a comma
separated format) is available via the University of Utah. Contact mesowest@met.utah.edu for further
information about ftp or ldm delivery.
Files that will be discontinued on June 1, 2005:
http://raws.boi.noaa.gov/irs/STATE_sumHH.txt
where STATE is a two letter ID and HH is 01, 12, 24 (1, 12, 24 h summaries).
These products are also currently available via the web page
http://raws.boi.noaa.gov/rawssum.html
and that page will no longer be maintained.
These products are redundant with several ROMAN products that allow users to view RAWS data by state,
GACC, NWS county warning area or fire weather zones. See for example, the ROMAN Current Weather Summary:
http://www.met.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/raws_ca_monitor.cgi?state=UT&rawsflag=2
The RAWS status file located at http://raws.boi.noaa.gov/irs/zz_irs_log.txt will be superseded by the
ROMAN/MesoWest status page:
http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/roman/help/status.html
