A long period southerly swell from the Southern Hemisphere will impact the coastal waters through the weekend, bringing rising surf to area beaches and an increasing risk of rip currents, long-shore currents, sneaker waves, and minor beach erosion. The surf will build through Saturday night, rising to around 3 to 6 feet on the beaches south of Point Conception, and to 4 to 8 feet on the Central Coast. The largest surf will be on beaches with a southerly aspect. A long period swell creates powerful surf, and waves will break with more force than you might be used to. The powerful breaking waves will also result in strong long-shore currents and rip currents as a large amount of water is transported through the surf zone toward the beaches. Sneaker waves will be possible, especially early in the event as the longest period waves arrive. Beach goers might see long lulls in wave activity, with much larger waves appearing suddenly, which might sweep you off your feet and into the water. Avoid climbing on rocks or jetties near the water’s edge and never turn your back to the ocean. (click for more)
