NWS Basic Definitions

• WATCH

  • Conditions favorable for severe weather in or near the watch area

• WARNING

  • Severe weather imminent or occurring in the warned area

• SEVERE THUNDERSTORM

  • A storm which produces hail ¾ inch in diameter or larger and/or wind gusts 58 mph or greater (or a tornado)
    • Note: Does not include lightning or heavy rain
