APPENDIX J - WEATHER BROCHURES

The following brochures are made available through special funds from the National Weather Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross. If you desire to obtain more than 5 copies, please contact the American Red Cross or the NWS Publications Internet homepage from the Office of Meteorology. Under "Publications," the web site lists each brochure and specifics whether it is available in text-only or a full-color version. The site explains how to obtain the publications. Please view the following Internet address: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/brochures.htm

The American Red Cross and other national organizations including the National Weather Service have published a new resource guide on disaster safety entitle "Talking About Disaster: Guide for Standard Messages."

This guide provides standardized safety messages for 13 natural hazards and general disaster preparedness topics. The guide provides messages, explanations, statistics, or reasons to reinforce the credibility of the message and correct myths and information related to natural hazards. The project was undertaken because research shows when the public receives consistent information, it will prepare and respond when disaster threatens.
