SPOT TEMPERATURES

When you're listening to the weather report and you hear "the high today in Spokane was 43 ", do you ever wonder where that temperature was measured? This can be puzzling especially when one bank thermometer downtown read 47 and another one on the north end of town said 45 . There can be a noticeable range in temperature from one side of the city to the other, such as from Sunset Hill to Otis Orchards. This is also true for many other cities across the Inland Northwest.

Temperature reports come from a wide variety of sources. For Spokane, the official temperature is measured at the Spokane International Airport. It may have slightly cooler temperatures than downtown Spokane since it is located west of town and sits at a higher elevation. Other temperature readings come from the area airports come from automated sensors, like Coeur d'Alene, Pullman, Wenatchee and Lewiston. The temperatures in Davenport, Bonners Ferry, Winchester and Leavenworth are reported by cooperative observers on a daily basis.
