The national weather service in PENDLETON TO HOST OPEN HOUSE

            Weather Forecast Office Pendleton, Ore., will host an open house as part of NOAA’s year-long celebration to commemorate its 200 years of science, service and stewardship to the nation. This event provides an opportunity to visit a National Weather Service office and view the latest weather forecasting technologies. This is a joint event with the Oregon Army National Guard. Open house activities will include:

  • Demonstrations on how digital weather forecasts are made for seven days
  • Programs about severe weather and the instruments that meteorologists use
  • Information on how meteorologists forecast the weather for forest fires
  • Free Skywarn storm spotter training
  • Displays of Oregon Army National Guard tanks and aircraft
  • Rocket demonstrations from the Blue Mountain Rocketeers
  • Numerous demonstrations, tours, refreshments and door prizes

            The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agency of the U.S. Commerce Department, is celebrating 200 years of science and service to the nation.  From the establishment of the Survey of the Coast in 1807 by Thomas Jefferson to the formation of the Weather Bureau and the Commission of Fish and Fisheries in the 1870s, much of America 's scientific heritage is rooted in NOAA.
