Heavy precipitation in southwest flow October 28 2005

Broad southwest flow brought widespread precipitation to most of Utah on October 28 2005 (Fig. 1).

Two significant embedded short wave troughs moved up from the south and enhanced the forced

the majority of this precipitation (Figs. 2, 3,4,5 and 6).  A surface trough across the Great Salt Lake was

a focus for heavier moist convection early morning on October 28th  and a weak cold front over far

southern Utah focused thunderstorms during the afternoon hours (Figs. 7 and 8).  The most significant

precipitation was orographically forced from Ben Lomond Peak in the northern Wasatch Range south to

Mount Timpanogos.  Precipitation amounts on favored slopes in the Wasatch Range received 2 to 3

inches during a 24-h period.  The most persistent band of precipitation extended from Mud Springs

across the southern Wasatch Front and into Mount Timpanogos (see precipitation totals).  The

thunderstorms in southern Utah produced locally heavy rain in a short duration and caused significant

rises to the Paria and Price Rivers (see hydrographs).  Snow levels in northern Utah were about 8000 feet

and new snowfall ranged from 6 to 18 inches above 9000 feet.
