Roland L. Hansen (left), Cooperative Observer at Fairfield, Utah, was presented the Benjamin Franklin Award in front of an audience of school children in the Historic Territorial School Building in Fairfield, Utah. Mr. Hansen was delighted to have his award presented to him in the historic school building as his late wife had attended the one room school as a child. The award was presented to Mr. Hansen by Mr. Robert Diaz (right), Acting Deputy Director of the National Weather Service, Western Region. Also attending the ceremony were Dr. Larry Dunn, MIC, WFO Salt Lake City, Mrs. Susan Nelson, NWS Western Region Coop Program Manager, and Mr. Steve Summy, OPL, WFO Salt Lake City. The school children were on a field trip from south Salt Lake City. In addition to being presented the Benjamin Franklin Award, Mr. Hansen was presented with congratulatory letters from State and Federal elected Senators and Members of the House.
The Fairfield cooperative weather station began on Sept. 28, 1950 by Mr. Hansen’s father-in-law, Henry Armstrong. Roland served as the stand-by observer from 1950 until he took control of the station on November 24, 1952. In 1987, Hansen received the prestigious John Campanius Holm Award. Roland has also received the Stoll Award for serving 50 years as a cooperative observer.
