DESCRIPTION OF THE 2006 SALT LAKE CITY FIRE WEATHER DISTRICT:

 

Forecast Area 1...Northern Utah

(Covers the Northern Utah IFC dispatch area boundaries)

 

Zone 420....Great Salt Lake Desert and Mountains

Covers primarily uninhabited wilderness in Box Elder and Tooele counties.  Elevations mainly vary from  4200-6000 feet ASL.  The primarily north-south oriented mountain ranges can rise up to 11,000 feet ASL however. This zone is mainly composed of Salt Lake District BLM, the Dugway Proving Grounds (DOD), and Utah State owned lands.  It also includes the Golden Spike National Historic Site (NPS), the Skull Valley Indian Reservation (BIA), the Tooele Army Depot in the Rush valley (DOD) and USFS land in the Raft River, Stansbury, and Sheeprock Mountains.

 

                Zone 421....Cache Valley

Covers primarily the privately owned land of the populated Cache valley. 

Elevations  vary from  4500-6000 feet ASL.

 

                Zone 422....Northern Wasatch Front

Covers primarily the privately owned land of the densely populated Northern Wasatch Front.  Also includes the Bear River and Ogden Bay National Bird Refuges, as well as the DOD’s Hill Airfield.  Elevations  vary from  4200-6000 feet ASL.

                               

                Zone 423....Salt Lake and Tooele Valleys

Covers primarily the privately owned land of the densely populated Salt Lake and Tooele valleys.  Also includes the Tooele Army Depot and some Salt Lake District BLM land in the Tooele valley.  Elevations  vary from  4200-6000 feet.

 

Zone 424....Southern Wasatch Front

Covers primarily the privately owned land of the densely populated Southern portion of the Wasatch Front.  Also includes the Camp Williams military reservation and some Salt Lake District BLM land.  Elevations  vary from  4200-6000 feet except for a few isolated mountains rising up as high as 7000 feet.

 

Zone 425....Wasatch Mountain Valleys

Covers primarily the privately owned land of the populated Wasatch mountain  valleys.  This includes the Weber river valley, Ogden river valley, Snyderville basin, Heber and Kamas valleys.  Elevations  vary from 5500-7000 feet ASL.

 

                Zone 426....Wasatch Mountains north of Interstate-80

The high elevations of the Wasatch mountains north of I-80.  Covers the majority of the Wasatch-Cache NF.  Also includes some Salt Lake District BLM land.  Elevations  vary from 6000-10,000 feet.

 

               

 

Zone 427....Wasatch Mountains south of Interstate-80 and Northern and Western Slopes         of the Uinta Mountains

The high elevations of the Wasatch Mountains  south of I-80 as well as the Northern and Western Slopes of the Uinta Mountains.  Covers portions of the Wasatch-Cache NF and the entire Uinta NF.  Also includes some Salt Lake District BLM land and the Timpanogos Cave NM (NPS).  Elevations  vary from 6000-13,500 feet.

           

 

Forecast Area 2...Central Utah

(Covers the Richfield IFC dispatch area boundary)

 

            Zone 433....Sanpete and Sevier Valleys

Covers Richfield District BLM, private and Utah State owned land in the Sanpete and Sevier valleys.  Elevations vary from 5000-6000 feet ASL.

                       

            Zone 434....West Central Deserts and Mountains

Covers the entire Fillmore District BLM and Utah State owned lands in Millard and most of Juab counties.  It also includes the Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge and the Goshute Indian Reservation (BIA).  Elevations vary generally from 4500-9000 feet ASL except up to 12,000 feet in the Deep Creek Range.  

 

            Zone 436....Central Utah Mountains

The high elevations of Central Utah comprised of the entire Fishlake NF and the Sanpete Ranger district of the Manti-La Sal NF.  Also includes pockets of Richfield District BLM land.  Elevations vary from 6000-12,000 feet.

 

            Zone 438....Henry Mountains and surrounding deserts

Covers all of Capitol Reef NP and the Richfield BLM district between Capitol Reef and Glen Canyon National Rec Area.  Also includes  the Wayne county portion of the Glen Canyon Recreational Area and the Horseshoe Canyon Extension of Canyonlands NP.   Elevations vary from 4000-12,000 feet ASL.

 

 

Forecast Area 3...Southwest Utah

(Covers the Cedar City IFC dispatch area boundary)

 

Zone 435....Southwest Deserts and Mountains

Covers the Cedar City District BLM, private and Utah State owned lands in Beaver and Iron Counties. It also includes the Indian Peak Wildlife Management Area.  Elevations vary from 5000-9000 feet ASL.         

 

Zone 437....Southwest and South Central Mountains

The higher elevations of Southwest and South Central Utah.  Includes the entire Dixie NF, Bryce Canyon NP, Cedar Breaks NM, and Zion NP above 5000 feet. Also includes   northern portions of the Kanab BLM District as well as small portions of the St George BLM district.  Elevations  vary from 5000-11,500 feet.

 

            Zone 439....Utahs Dixie and Zion Canyon

The lowest elevations in Utah located in south central and southeast Washington county.  This zone consists primarily of St. George District BLM, private and Utah State owned  lands below 5000 feet in Washington County.   It also contains the Paiute Indian Reservation and lower portions of Zion NP, namely the Zion Canyon Area.  Elevations  vary from 2800-5000 feet. 

 

            Zone 440....South Central Utah

Covers the Grand Staircase-Escalante NM in Kane and Garfield counties.  Also includes the Vermilion Cliffs (St George BLM) in extreme southeast Washington county, and southern portions of the Kanab BLM District.  Elevations vary from about 4500-8000 feet.

 

            Zone 441....Glen Canyon National Recreation Area/Lake Powell

Covers the entire Glen Canyon National Recreation Area south of the Wayne county line.  Also includes the Rainbow Bridge NM and the Navajo Indian Reservation west of Navajo Mountain.  Elevations vary from about 3700-6000 feet ASL.

 

Forecast Area 4...Southeast and East Central Utah * See Note

Zone 431....Eastern Slope Wasatch Plateau and Castle Valley

Covers the Price and Ferron ranger districts of the Manti-La Sal NF, Price District BLM, private and Utah State lands in Carbon and Emery counties. Includes the populated Castle valley along state highway 10 from Helper south to Emery. Elevations vary from 5000-11,000 feet ASL.

                       

            Zone 432....Southwest Tavaputs Plateau/Book Cliffs and the San Rafael Swell

Covers the Price District BLM as well as private and Utah State lands in eastern Carbon and Emery counties. Includes the Sunnyside and Green River areas.  Elevations vary from 4000-10,000 feet ASL.

 

 

Forecast Area...Northeastern Utah (Duchesne County) * See Note

            Zone 428....Southern Slope Uinta Mountains

Covers the northwestern portions of the Ashley NF.  Also includes portions of the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation and privately owned lands in northern Duchesne county.  Elevations vary from 6,500-13,500 feet ASL.

                       

            Zone 429....Northwest Tavaputs Plateau

The southwestern portion of the Ashley NF, the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation in southern Duchesne county and the Vernal District of the BLM. Also includes private and Utah State lands in southern Duchesne county.  Elevations vary from 5500-9500 feet.

 

Zone 430....Western Uinta Basin

The Uinta Basin in Duchesne county.  Includes  portions of the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation, private, Utah State and Vernal District BLM lands.  Elevations vary from about 5000-6500 feet.

 

 

 

* Note: Vernal IFC will receive a single consolidated Fire Weather Planning Forecast and Red Flag Warnings from Grand Junction NWS.  Moab IFC with receive a single consolidated Fire Weather Planning Forecast and Red Flag Warnings from Salt Lake City NWS. Spot forecast duties will be continue to be divided between Salt Lake and Grand Junction.
