General severe weather information

Exactly what constitutes a severe thunderstorm?

A thunderstorm is considered severe when any or all of the following occur:
  • hail 3/4" in diameter or larger
  • winds in excess of 50 knots (58 mph)
  • the occurence of a tornado or funnel cloud

Severe thunderstorm dangers

Severe thunderstorms can produce deadly:
  • downburst winds
  • large hailstones
  • lightning


What is the difference between a watch and a warning?
Severe Storm Watch
A severe thunderstorm watch tells you when and where severe thunderstorms are most likely to occur.
Severe Storm Warning
A severe thunderstorm warning is issued when severe weather has been reported or is imminent.
Tornado Watch
A tornado watch means that tornadoes are possible in the area. Remain alert for approaching storms.
Tornado Warning
A tornado warning means that tornadoes have been spotted in the area or indicated by weather radar.


Flash Flood or Flood Watch
Flash flooding or flooding is possible in the designated watch area - be alert.
Flash Flood or Flood Warning
Flash flooding or flooding has been reported or is imminent - take necessary precautions at once.
Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory
Flooding of small streams, streets, and low-lying areas, such as railroad underpasses and urban storm drains, is occurring.
Flash Flood or Flood Statement
Follow-up information regarding a flash flood/flood event.
