Cyclone: Hurricane Javier
Date it affected AZ: September 18-19, 2004
Affected Arizona as...: Remnants (dissipated over southern Sonora, Mexico)

Once a mighty category 4 hurricane, Javier approached the southwest Baja coast as a minimal tropical storm on September 19 before sweeping across central Baja California and into Sonora before dissipating. Although the low level portion of the depression never made it into Arizona, considerable moisture and the mid level remnant of Javier was picked up an upper level trough moving into California. As the moisture spread into southeast Arizona on the 18th, several severe thunderstorms developed across southeast Arizona. One of the storms caused the first suspension of an NCAA football game due to lightning. Parts of southeast Arizona received 1 to 3 inches of rain from either the severe thunderstorms on the 18th, or from the heavy rain which fell with the mid level remains of Javier over Cochise County on the 19th.
