Red Flag Warning Criteria Used by NWS Las Vegas
-California-
California Zone 229 (lower Colorado River valley):
If the following three criteria are expected for a period of at least 3 hours:
- 20 foot (10-min avg) sustained winds of 20 mph or greater or gusting to 35 mph or greater.
- Relative humidity 15 percent or lower.
- NFDRS adjective fire danger rating of "High" or higher.
California Zones 226, 227, and 228, (high deserts):
If the following criteria are expected for a period of at least 3 hours:
- Wind gusts GTE 35 MPH
- Relative humidity less than (< ) 15%
-OR-
- Dry lightning event* over the Sierra Nevada.
* Dry Lightning Event: A thunderstorm event that is not accompanied by enough precipitation to significantly wet the fuels.
Significant precipitation is defind as ranging from > .05 inches for grass or brush fuels to > .15 inches for closed-canopy timber/heavy fuels.
-Nevada-
Nevada Zones 460-466:
Fuels are critical and sustained winds GTE 20 mph or gusts GTE 35 mph for 3+ hours AND RH LTE 15%
-OR-
Dry Thunderstorms with areal coverage of widely sct or greater (>15%) in a fire wx zone
-Arizona-
Arizona Zones 101 and 102:
The following three conditions must occur simultaneously for three (3) or more hours across any portion of a fire zone.
- 20 foot (10-min avg) sustained winds of 20 mph or greater or gusting to 35 mph or greater.
- Relative humidity 15 percent or lower.
- NFDRS adjective fire danger rating of "High" or higher.
