Center Weather Service Unit (CWSU) Salt Lake City
Mission:
The Salt Lake Center Weather Service Unit (CWSU) is co-located with the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Salt Lake Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC). The CWSU is staffed by a team of National Weather Service Meteorologists. Our office is open seven days a week from 6:30am until 9:30pm. The primary function and responsibility of the CWSU is to provide meteorological advice and consultation to center operations personnel and other designated FAA air traffic facilities, terminal and Flight Service Stations, within the ARTCC area of responsibility. A special emphasis is given to those weather conditions that would be hazardous to aviation or would impede the flow of air traffic or cause significant ground and/or airborne delays. Two unscheduled products are issued to cover these situations. The Center Weather Advisory (CWA) is an aviation weather warning for thunderstorms, icing, turbulence, and low IFR ceilings and visibilities. This is similar but more localized then AIRMETS or SIGMET's which are issued by the Aviation Weather Center (AWC). The Meteorological Impact Statement (MIS) is a 2-12 hour forecast for weather conditions which are expected to impact ARTCC operations.
