KSEA VERTICAL WIND PROFILE - This graphic shows a forecast of
vertical winds over Seattle, WA from the surface to 11,000 feet MSL. Forecast winds are displayed
at 1-hour intervals out through 9 hours. The graphic is updated hourly based on
the latest run of the RUC model. Wind speeds are color-coded with speeds 28 to 37
kts displayed in blue, 38-47 kts in displayed in pink, and winds >47
kts displayed in red. Wind direction is indicated by the staff extending from the
dot using a 360 degree compass, where 180 degrees indicates a south wind and 360
degrees indicates a north wind. The solid red line indicates the forecast
freezing level over Seattle.

KSEA LOW LEVEL WIND FORECAST - This chart is similar to the KSEA
Vertical Wind Profile graphic explained above. Interpretation and color coding are
the same; however, this graphic shows a high-resolution display of RUC
model forecasted winds between the surface and 2,000 feet AGL. Winds
are displayed at 1 hour intervals out through 9 hours. The chart is updated
hourly with each new run of the RUC model. The height scale on the left shows elevation
in feet above mean sea level (MSL), while the scale on the right shows the height
in feet above ground level (AGL). |
KSEA LOW LEVEL WIND SHEAR POTENTIAL -
According to NWS Instructions 10-813,
LLWS is defined as the wind vector difference between wind at the surface and wind 2,000 feet
AGL. Units are defined as knots per 2,000 ft AGL. LLWS greater than 20 kt can be
hazardous to airplane landing operations - especially for smaller aircraft - and
is a major concern to airport management and aviation weather forecasters. Output
is color-coded with LLWS<15kt displayed in green, 15-20 kts in yellow, and >20
kts colored in red. Lighter, washed-out shades indicate the shear is mostly speed
shear, where the change in wind direction from the top to the bottom of the layer
is <60 degrees. Solid, darker shades of green, yellow, and red indicate
directional shear greater than or equal to 60 degrees in the layer. |
