  Area Forecast Discussion
  National Weather Service Reno NV
  307 AM PDT Thu Sep 24 2020

  .SYNOPSIS...

Afternoon and evening breezes today will keep the worst smoke and
air quality impacts near the larger fires, with smoke settling
into some valleys tonight. Lighter winds will keep hazy conditions
in some areas Friday, but also reduce additional smoke spread
into the region. Dry conditions will continue through at least
the end of September, with very warm temperatures next week.

  .DISCUSSION...

No significant changes were made to the current forecast, which
features one more breezy day today, with continued dry conditions
and a warmup to well above average daytime temperatures next
  week.

One more breezy day is expected as a trough of low pressure
continues to move across the Pacific Northwest. Winds could be a
bit stronger compared to yesterday, with peak gusts edging above
30 mph in some areas near and north of I-80, although humidity
will also trend upward as well. Overall, given the dry nature of
the fuels across our region, brief localized areas of critical
fire weather conditions are still possible this afternoon, but not
widespread enough for issuing any fire weather-related warnings.

Smoke and haze will likely continue in and near areas that have
been impacted in the past couple of days, including parts of
northeast CA-northwest NV from the North Complex, and southern
Mono-Mineral counties from the Creek fire. As winds decrease
Friday, smoke and haze may be slower to clear out of these areas
during the day, although less additional smoke from these fires
would push farther east later in the afternoon. For this weekend,
weak northeast flow may focus smoke and haze impacts closer to or
west of the Sierra crest, with a short period of gusty east-
northeast winds possible across the Sierra ridges late Saturday
  into Sunday.

Temperatures will remain above average today through the weekend,
although highs should be a few degrees cooler than recent days.
However, another impressive ridge of high pressure builds over
the western US next week, bringing one more period of summer-like
days, with highs near or above 90 degrees across some lower
elevations, and lower-mid 80s near the Sierra. Nights will remain
cool though, with lows mainly in the 40s to lower 50s, so heat
health impacts won`t be significant. Strong subsidence and dry air
mass under this ridge will keep conditions unfavorable for
thunderstorms, other than some flat cumulus possible near the
Sierra around the middle of next week. MJD

  .AVIATION...

Winds will remain breezy (20-30 kt gusts) from the southwest again
this afternoon, with Sierra ridge gusts near 45 kt. Short periods
of LLWS could occur between 17-20Z today for the far western NV
terminals (KRNO-KCXP-KMEV) as these winds mix down to the
foothills and eventually into the valleys. VFR conditions will
prevail across much of the region, except near and downstream of
the larger Creek and North Complex wildfires, where visibility
could be reduced with possible lower smoke layer ceilings,
including KMMH and KSVE, with slantwise visibility reductions in
haze for some approaches into other main terminals.

Lighter winds with some areas of haze are expected Friday and into
the weekend, although the more significant visibility impacts from
current large fires are more likely to remain west of the Sierra
  crest. MJD
